Digital Methodology: Week 4

For this week’s assignment I decided to use Voyant Tools, to do a text analysis of America’s top three music genres. I was trying to decipher the reason why different types of music are popular. I plugged in each of the top songs lyrics into Voyant, and got a visual representation of the lyrics. If you want to take a look at the webpage I created for my project, click here!

I found the process of using HTML and CSS super stressful. I have used HTML to look at webpages and edit the occasional paragraph on a webpage as a meme, but never from scratch like this week. I ran into some difficulty while getting my basics down, and was especially handicapped because I wasn’t able to view most of the lectures live. Using code academy, which I didn’t find as useful as watching the lectures later on twitch, gave me a little better handle on what I was doing. Needless to say, I got the assignment done, and I am pretty proud of the outcome as a whole.

If I could do it all over again, I would write out my essay on a word document before I put it in HTML. I know that the advice was to do exactly that, but for some reason I decided to dive right in. Even though it was really difficult, probably the most challenging module so far, I had fun and learned a lot!

SIDE NOTE: I also learned that you can edit a myspace page with HTML! I edited my friends old page (barely anything). I was going to share it, but as i’m writing, he asked me not to.
